STAR+ Formula for Conflict
- Situation: Set the context. "Our team was on a tight deadline for a major feature launch, and the PM and I disagreed on the technical approach."
- Task: What was your role? "As the tech lead, I was responsible for the architecture decision."
- Action: Be specific. "I scheduled a meeting, prepared a comparison matrix of both approaches, and facilitated a data-driven discussion."
- Result: Quantify. "We shipped on time with zero production incidents. The relationship with the PM actually improved because we had a framework for future disagreements."
- + Learning: What would you do differently? "I'd involve the PM earlier in the technical discovery process."
Types of Conflict to Prepare
- Technical disagreement (engineer vs engineer, engineer vs PM)
- Team priority conflict (two features competing for the same sprint)
- Process disagreement (agile vs waterfall, code review standards)
- Interpersonal tension (difficult team member, cultural misunderstandings)
